If you go to your local drugstore to purchase a hair removal product you may get confused as to what to buy and what not to buy! It is because you will find dozens of products on the shelf of the drugstore devoted to get rid of the unwanted hair on your body. Before you set off to put out that unwanted strand of hair o your body it would be better if you learn about the different kinds of hair on the body. Every hair strand is made up of a hard protein called as keratin which can also be found in the toenails and fingernails. Hair growth initiates under the surface of the skin, at a hair root in the hair follicle as a miniature tube inside the skin.

You bear two kinds of hair on your body, one of which is vellus and the other is terminal. The vellus hair is fine, short and soft. Almost all the women have vellus hair on some of their body parts namely back, face and chest. Vellus hair may be more noticeable and darker in some women specifically on those with darker complexion. The vellus hairs help the body to sustain a constant temperature by facilitating with insulation. The terminal hair on the other hand is darker, coarser and more in length as compared to vellus hair. It’s the kind of hair which grows on your head. When puberty is around terminal hair start growing in the pubic regions and armpits. On men the terminal hair starts growing on chest and other parts of the body like the face, back and legs. Terminal hair grows to provide protection and cushioning.

The following ways provide help to get rid of unwanted hair:

Shaving: It is done with the help of a razor and in this the person removes the tip of the shaft of hair which grows out through the skin. There are some razors which are totally disposable while there are some with disposable blades and the most advanced are the electric ones. Men usually shave their face with razors while women shave their legs, bikini area and their underarms.

Plucking: With the help of tweezers. The skin is stretched tight; the hair close to the root is gripped and pulled out.

Depilatories: Depilatory is a liquid or cream which gets rid of the hair from the surface of the skin. Depilatories work by acting in response to the structure of protein of the hair, hence the hair dissolves and can be easily wiped off or washed away.

Waxing: In this method of hair removal the wax which is a sticky substance is applied on the area of the skin with unwanted hair, then a strip of cloth is applied over the wax and is pulled off quickly taking the dead skin cells and the hair root with it. The wax can be applied cold and can be warmed up as well. Waxing can be done both at home and at a salon.
